On May 11th, Shimadzu Corporation published its financial results for Q1 2021. Due to the companies reporting cycle, this is its fourth fiscal quarter. For the medical systems business, quarterly sales reached ¥20.6 billion, compared with ¥19.9 bn in Q1 2020, an increase of approximately +3.5% year-on-year.

The medical systems business has two reportable segments, ‘x-ray systems’ and ‘other’. The sales growth during the quarter was driven by higher sales from both segments, led by x-ray systems. Sales from the x-ray systems segment increased by +¥660m (+4.5%) and sales from the other segment increased by +¥30m (+0.5%), compared with Q1 2020. The sales growth during the quarter was driven by higher sales of mobile x-ray systems associated with the Coronavirus pandemic combined with strong demand for fluoroscopy and general radiography systems in specific markets.
