OEM Market Share: Computed Tomography: United States

About this data

This blog post presents installation data for Computed Tomography (CT) systems in the United States. This data is a sample extract from PMI’s U.S. X-ray system installation data solution. This data solution aggregates data from a variety of official sources including the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as well as local government organisations at the state level in order to present a comprehensive, detailed and authoritative view of X-ray system installations throughout the United States.

The following data presented is for the state of COLORADO ONLY.

Stationary Whole Body CT Systems including Nuclear Medicine CT

On a volume basis, the ratio between “new” and “second-hand” CT system installations was approximately 70:30 from 2012 to 2020. This ratio was closer to 80:20 from 2016 onward. The definition of a “second-hand” system is where the reported year of manufacture (YOM) is 4 or more years prior to the installation date. The ‘unknown’ segment is where the YOM was not reported.

On a volume basis, systems manufactured by GE Healthcare accounted for 54% of total installation volumes, followed by Siemens (28%), Canon (10%), Philips (8%) and Hitachi (<1%).

The sole Hitachi installation was for a new Supria system at a private clinic.

PET/CT Systems

On a volume basis, systems manufactured by GE Healthcare accounted for the majority of installations between 2012 and 2020, although, from 2018 onward Siemens Healthineers captured the majority of market share with its Biograph family of systems.

SPECT/CT Systems

On a volume basis, systems manufactured by GE Healthcare accounted for the majority of installations between 2012 and 2020, although Siemens Healthineers captured approximately 40% of total volumes.

Mobile CT Systems

On a volume basis, systems manufactured by Stryker or MOBIUS Imaging accounted for the majority of mobile CT installations. These were for the MOBI-CT 32 solution. NeuroLogica accounted for 1/4 of installations that were of its CereTom solution. The GE Healthcare installation was for its portable Revolution CT solution.
